Hello and Happy Friday!
As promised, here’s part 2 of my grocery shopping adventures, this week taking me to Trader Joe’s.
For a total of $38.48, I purchased:
- 3 Protein Drinks (2 Vanilla Almond Chai, 1 Banana Almond Butter)
- 1 Bag of Organic Olive Oil Popcorn
- 1 Pack of Raspberries
- 1 Harvest Grain Salad
- 1 Greek Yogurt (Pumpkin, duh it’s spooky season)
- 2 Chicken Meals (2 Roasted Rosemary Boneless Chicken Breasts with Brown & Wild Rice)
- Asparagus Saute (Asparagus, mushrooms, onions)
How this broke down over the week –
Protein Drink for Breakfast (Greek Yogurt this morning)
Not my favorite, they were kind of chalky and did not have as much protein as a true ‘protein drink’
Harvest Salad for Lunch
The harvest salad was a mix of: green onions, wild rice/quinoa, butternut squash, kale, pecans, dried cranberries. It was very yummy but not very filling and there was too much quinoa and wild rice that made it more like a rice bowl than a traditional salad. However, I ate this for lunch over two days and still have some left over for today’s lunch – so worth it
Roasted Rosemary Boneless Chicken Breast with Brown & Wile Rice + Asparagus Saute
I was a little nervous about the chicken meals because they were wrapped in plastic and did not look appealing – but I was wrong.
Out of the two chicken breasts, I got 4 meals: two lunch meals (prepped above) two dinner bowls (eaten). The flavor on the chicken was quite good and when I added the vegetables into the same pan with the wild rice and brown rice mix, everything tasted pretty good. Again, too much of the rice mix and not enough of the chicken – I still have just the rice leftover so I might add some chicken to that for lunch today, but I wish there had been more chicken or even added veggies (I had to buy the veggies separately).
Overall, Sprouts is still my favorite. I still enjoy ‘halfway cooking’ so Sprouts is helpful with fulfilling that desire. Trader Joes was all pre-made. The flavors were good, but I was missing the cooking portion and the overall portions: I needed to buy lunch and dinner for Friday, which is not the goal.
The point of this grocery store adventure is hoping to maintain a healthy diet while still trying new things and I appreciate each of you that have joined me this week and last week. I am also hoping that any college students/eating-for-one/daughter/son-back-at-home that doesn’t know what to eat or how to make a full meal is following along to find healthier alternatives that are both yummy and also affordable.
I am about out of grocery stores in Redlands though (ones similar to Sprouts or Trader Joes, etc) so I may have to branch out next week.
